First Annual
Carnival Held At Chaps
July 4th, dateline Cleveland: This holiday weekend will be remembered as the time the rains came out to play, the people stayed home to pout, and the crowd went to Chaps to start things cooking. Chaps, Cleveland's newest bar-disco complex, hosted a two-day July Fourth Carnival for the benefit of Cleveland's gay organizations that is destined to become an annual event.
The Carnival Festival was designed by the staff at Chaps with the intention that the community sponsored carnival was featured during the early evening hours while the disco was primed to drive the late night party on til dawn with music provided by Dan Eakin, formerly of Akron's Old Plantation.
Even though the Carnival was put on working against a tight deadline, organizations from as far away as Toledo's Cardinal Court were able to participate with booths, games, and refreshments. The Stallions sponsored "The Boiler Room," a gay laughin-the-dark; while High Gear contributed with a dunking booth drawing on various members of the community to donate time to getting dipped in the chilling booth.
By the end of the weekend, the party at Chaps had kicked Cleve-
land into high summer, and found itself a new playground to boot. Here's hoping next summer's Fourth of July Carnival spills itself outside and fills both parking lots with people from the entire five state area.
The event drew large crowds both nights, that started back in the carnival area and gradually moved onto the disco floor. The highlight of the two-day event was the indoor fireworks that climaxed the carnival on Sunday, announcing the disco party that Immediately followed.
